4 Steps To Take When You Find A Leaking Pipe In Your Bathroom

There is no denying that owning your own home can be a major expense from time to time, especially if you have an older home. There are any number of different things that can go wrong inside your home at almost any time, but by far one of the most frustrating problems can be when you are having plumbing issues, and nowhere are these more common than in the bathroom. When it comes to a leaking pipe in your bathroom, the damage can actually turn out to be quite serious, no matter how inconspicuous the leak might appear to be at first. Leaking bathroom fixtures and pipes can be a big issue for your home and can cause serious damage to your home, your possessions, and your health if you don't make sure they are taken care of in a timely and professional manner. It is important to know what you need to do in this situations, as time lost is damage done in most cases. To help you with this, we have put together a short list of four steps to take whenever you notice a leaking pipe in your home's bathroom.

Stop The Water

The first thing you need to do in the event of any plumbing leak is attempt to turn off the flow of water to where you suspect the pipe has broken. The stop tap for your water is going to be on the water main, which is usually located somewhere under the kitchen sink or where the main service pipe connects to your home. Making sure that you and your family know where the water shut-off is in your home will save you valuable time in the event that you have a leaking or burst pipe. Once the water main is turned off, you will want to drain the pipes. To do this, you are going to want to run the cold water on all of the faucets, and be sure to flush the toilet at least once, then turn off the hot water heater and repeat the process until the flow of water stops.

Locate The Broken Pipe & Inspect The Damage

After you have finished draining the water from the pipes, you will want to find the broken pipe to get an idea of location and the kind of damage. If the damage is to a smaller pipe, you might be able to get by with a simple patching for the time being, but if it is a larger pipe that is leaking, you are more than likely going to want the help of a professional as the larger pipes usually lead to a number of other connections that can get messed up if the work isn't done correctly.

Get Repairs

As we stated above, for any leaks in smaller bathroom piping, you might be able to get by with a simple patching job, or by replacing it yourself with parts from your local home improvement store, but if the pipe is larger, or the pipe has sustained a fairly severe break, you will most likely want the help of a professional. There is a lot that can go wrong with plumbing repairs, and if you haven't performed this kind of work before, the potential for that to happen is much greater.

Get A Professional Drying Crew If Needed

If you had a particularly bad burst in your pipes, and you have water on the walls, ceilings, or in puddles on the floor, it is definitely in your best interest to contact a professional crew to get everything dried out before the standing water has a chance to do any lasting damage to your home. Just using fans and open windows for serious moisture problems is a very easy way to find yourself with a serious mold or mildew problem, and could actually have adverse effects on the health of you and your family.
